How Much Does a Small-Business Website Cost in Malaysia?

There is no responsible single market price: define the smallest useful scope, separate setup from recurring costs and compare written deliverables.

Three providers can quote three very different products when they receive different briefs. A one-page template, a content-led business site and a booking system are not comparable merely because each is called a website.

1. Start with the business job

  • Help customers confirm services, location, hours and contact details.
  • Turn informed visitors into useful WhatsApp or form enquiries.
  • Present credentials, service boundaries or a portfolio before a sales conversation.
  • Collect structured booking or quotation details.
  • Sell products, accept payments or support an internal workflow.

Payment, live availability, customer accounts and operational integrations add business rules, testing and support responsibility. Do not buy them just in case, but do not disguise a real operational system as a cheap brochure site either.

2. Budget for seven parts, not only design

Cost areaScope questionCost pattern
DiscoveryWho defines audiences, pages, questions and actions?Usually setup
Design and buildHow many layouts, breakpoints and states need testing?Mainly setup
ContentWho writes, supplies, edits and approves copy and media?Setup and updates
Domain and hostingWho owns registration, email, backups and capacity?Recurring
FunctionsAre forms, booking, payment, login or integrations required?Setup and recurring
Launch QAAre mobile, forms, redirects, metadata and browsers tested?Setup and after changes
MaintenanceWho handles updates, incidents, monitoring and renewals?Recurring or on demand

3. Compare the work behind the page count

  • A neighbourhood food business may need a current menu, hours, location, parking notes, original photos and one WhatsApp action. Ordering and loyalty systems are separate decisions.
  • An owner-led professional service may need boundaries, credentials, process, FAQs and a structured enquiry. Accurate copy approval can require more effort than the visual build.
  • A venue form that requests a preferred date is simpler than live availability, deposits and double-booking prevention. The latter is an operational system.

4. Separate setup price from first-year cost

One-off setupRecurring or variable
Planning, page structure and designDomain, hosting and business email
Build, content entry and initial integrationsPlugins, booking tools and subscriptions
Migration, redirects, testing and handoverMaintenance, backups and monitoring
Training and documentationContent changes and out-of-scope repairs

Keep domain registration and renewal contacts under business control. MYNIC explains that an unrenewed .my domain can pass through grace, redemption and deletion stages, interrupting associated website and email services.

5. Use the same checklist for every quote

  • Give each provider the same audience, page, language, deadline, content and integration brief.
  • Ask which deliverables, tests, metadata, redirects, revision rounds and handover items are included.
  • Confirm control of the domain, DNS, hosting, code or export, analytics, Search Console and subscriptions.
  • Separate a short defect warranty from ongoing maintenance and content work.
  • Agree how new pages, languages, booking rules or integrations will be estimated and approved.
  • Collect only necessary customer data and document who can access it and how long it is retained.

6. Recognise warning signs

  • The domain is registered to an unrelated party with no documented transfer rights.
  • Unlimited pages, revisions or support have no usable definition.
  • A booking, payment or automation system is priced without discovery.
  • The proposal promises first-page rankings, guaranteed leads or guaranteed revenue.
  • Content, licences, hosting, testing, backups or handover are missing from scope.
