Malaysia Small Business SEO Checklist: A Practical 30-Minute Review
Check whether Google can find the page, whether customers can understand it, and whether your business details, mobile experience and Search Console setup are accurate.
This checklist is for Malaysian SMEs, Melaka local businesses and founders managing their own websites. Run it on the homepage and one or two important service pages instead of trying to audit everything at once.
1. Confirm Google can crawl and index the page
- Search Google for site:yourdomain.com and check whether the homepage and key pages appear.
- Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for an accidental Disallow: / rule.
- Check the page source for a noindex directive left over from staging.
- Use Search Console URL Inspection when a specific page is missing or recently changed.
2. Use descriptive page titles and meta descriptions
Each important page should have a unique title and description. State the service or topic first, then the business or location where useful. Avoid copying the same metadata across every page and avoid promises such as “best” or “number one” unless they are independently supportable.
3. Keep one clear H1 and useful H2/H3 headings
The H1 should tell a visitor what the page is about. H2 and H3 headings should divide the content into questions, services, process, pricing, evidence and next steps. Headings should help a reader scan the page, not act as a place to repeat keywords mechanically.
4. Explain services, location and contact details directly
- State what the business offers in plain language.
- State the real service area, such as Melaka, Malaysia, Singapore or remote projects.
- Show a working phone, WhatsApp or email contact path.
- Use the same business name and contact details across the website and relevant profiles.
5. Check mobile usability and practical speed
- Open the page on a 390px-wide phone screen and confirm there is no horizontal overflow.
- Make sure body text is readable without zooming and buttons are easy to tap.
- Compress oversized images and remove scripts that do not support a real business need.
- Use PageSpeed Insights as diagnostic guidance, not as a promise of traffic or rankings.
6. Review images, alt text and internal links
Use descriptive filenames and concise alt text that explains what is shown. Link the homepage to important service pages, link related pages to each other, and click every navigation and CTA link to catch broken URLs before customers do.
7. Verify Google Business Profile eligibility and accuracy
8. Check Search Console and your sitemap
- Verify the domain property in Google Search Console.
- Submit the canonical sitemap URL and confirm Google can read it.
- Inspect newly launched or materially updated URLs.
- Review indexing reasons before repeatedly requesting indexing.
9. Add only accurate structured data
Organization, Person, Service, Product, Article and Breadcrumb structured data can help search systems understand a site when the visible page supports the same facts. Do not add fake ratings, testimonials, awards, addresses or FAQ content that is not visible to visitors.
